For the first week as an intern for AADP, I had learn a few things when I was there. What I had to do daily was to make special kits where it is made for cheek swabbing to find the perfect match for our patients. These special kits was made to find people with a certain dna that matches with our patient to cure leukemia. There was a festival at San Jose where they had a donor drive there. I was there for about four to 5 hours trying to help find participants to have a swab. We walk around saying, “ Have you swabbed yet?” to bring out their interest knowing what it might mean. What it mean is that we have a booth where we the special kits to have people take about seven minutes of their spare time to sign up and swab all four corners of their inner cheek. What it does would help add in more people who had not swabbed yet. Last year, the donor drive had gotten more than 100 participants to keep in the history for future leukemia patient. It was hard to find people who was able to become a participant since it wasn’t much of a place of attention. There was a strategy where we had a poster saying “Will you marrow me?” and having a really big and fluffy dog breed named Akita to catch the Japanese people's attention to help one of our patient named Kaylee who was japanese and caucasian. The reason why we needed more Japanese people to participate is because there is a higher chance of finding a match for Kaylee. While I was there at the booth, one of the workers who had been with AADP for about 5 years had explained everything that I could possible understand. Most people think that marrow donation would be very painful. But instead, we have the highest medical hospitals like UCSF, Stanford, etc. There was also a reason why the name AADP was made. The reason why it is called Asian American Donor Program is because asians are less likely to participate into these donations to help the future leukemia. But if you were one of the person who is one of the match and was chosen to give bone marrow, there are two ways for giving bone marrow. They had found a very effective way to gather blood into the machine and collect the stem cells and return the blood to you by using a machine. But you will be receiving an injection of Filgrastim for about 5 days and you might have flu-like symptoms before you start the marrow donation. The other way is where it’s extracted from the hip bone. The hip bone will replenish by the next few weeks. When the bone marrow is extracted from the hip bone, you will need moderate pain in the hip region feeling  like hitting yourself by the edge of the table or falling on ice.
